Every year of this decade, HOTELS' annual ranking of industry giants has listed Best Western International among the top three largest corporate hotel companies in the world. And for the past three years straight, the company has edged out Holiday Inn for the title of world's largest hotel brand. In existence since 1946, the Best Western name today comprises 3,800 independently owned and operated hotels in 78 countries and territories worldwide. Considering the longevity of the brand and its considerable size and international reach, not to mention the complexity of its operational structure as a non-profit membership organization, it seems reasonable to ask why Best Western's board of directors hired a self-professed rookie as its new president and CEO.
