The Senate passed a tax extender bill (H.R. 6049) September 23 that would extend the New Markets tax credit (NMTC) program for one year, with $3.5 billion in investment authority for calendar 2009. Under current law, the program will expire at the end of 2008. The Administration endorsed the bill, which also includes alternative minimum tax (AMT) relief, though it criticized some of the provisions in the legislation. The bill also includes extenders of other housing and real estate-related tax provisions, disaster-related tax incentives and relief, and an extension and expansion of energy conservation incentives.
