The pharmaceutical company Pfizer hosted a Healthy Ageing Summit in London on October 1st, the United Nation's International Day of Older Persons. The stated aim of the summit was "to gain an understanding of what impacts mental and physical health on a day-to-day basis, and what citizens really want from their local environments, leading to the development of a blueprint for healthy neighbourhoods for Europe's ageing population". As a scientist who studies the relationship between environment and health, I attended the meeting at the invitation of Edelman Health, which assisted Pfizer in coordinating the event. With my training in environmental psychology and public health, I appreciated the symbolism in the organiser's choice of venue, One Great George Street, home for a respectable British tradition of civil engineering founded on efforts to enhance the quality of human environments.
