The ethnic metabolic safety of drugs subject to phase II biotransformation was theoretically evaluated on the basis of an original concept. Predisposition to side effects of drugs is strong and the risk of side effects high (a) upon the administration of four out of five drugs metabolized by acetylation (to a higher degree) or of sulfadimezine (to a lower degree) in populations with a relatively high proportion of slow acetylators and (b) upon the administration of drugs metabolized by glucuronization, glutathione conjugation, methylation, or sulfation in populations with a relatively high proportion of individuals with deficiencies of metabolic enzymes, carriers of low-activity forms of these enzymes, or carriers of the zero phenotype for the given metabolic reaction.
