I want to use this editorial to express the urgent wish for human resource development (HRD) research and practice to continue and increase its relevance and responsiveness to the nations of the world, to organizations large and small, and to individuals, groups and units that constitute our work organizations. By many accounts in the business and popular press, the world of work is characterized by a stream of troubling developments ranging from news about plant closings and layoffs, home foreclosures, sharp rises in unemployment rates around the world, shrinking confidence in business and industry, and the attempts of governments to find solutions to structural and cyclical problems of a world-wide economic crisis. In these turbulent times, the role of our profession and the challenge to create or participate in a meaningful and constructive manner comes into sharp relief.
