This paper describes a case study in the Otago Harbour in which two years of data collected at the Dunedin Wharf and Port Chalmers tide gauges was used to test the performance of three tidal datum transfer methods, namely the range ratio method, the height difference method and the time difference method (both in a modified and an unmodified form). These gauges, which are separated by a distance of approximately 13km, are also linked by precise levelling techniques. It was found that the range ratio method showed the highest accuracy over shorter observation periods (i.e. seven days or less), with the height difference method showing comparable accuracy when using four weeks of data. While the traditional time difference method produced by far the poorest results, when used in a modified form it was found to produce results approaching the accuracy of those obtained by the other two methods.
