As reported in this Journal, No. 113, July 2004 (p 51) satellite imaging techniques have recently revealed that cartographers who prepared an ancient, ornate but apparently crude map of the North Atlantic may in fact have had a far better knowledge of ocean currents than was previously thought. In 1539 Olaus Magnus, an exiled Swedish priest living in Italy, published a remarkably detailed map of the Nordic countries, from Iceland in the west to Finland in the east. The elaborate Carta Marina broke entirely new ground in terms of the comprehensiveness and general accuracy of the information provided about these countries. The geographical outline of the Nordic countries has proved to be accurate and includes all the major island groups such as the Faeroes, Orkneys and Shetland Islands. As a result of his dislike of blank canvases, in addition to the geographic content, Olaus also included numerous ethnographic sketches and provided an astonishing wealth of information about the waters surrounding the Nordic countries. Consequently every available space is covered in ink.
