The paper will first review the history and development of Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) and Short Baseline (SBL) systems and highlight the issues in current practice. A detailed evaluation of the various component parts of a complex 'hybrid' system will then be presented. This will highlight the significance and potential sources of error present in the various types of observations used to determine position and depth. A brief summary of the particular mathematics required to solve the 3-D solutions will be followed by a review of various geometrical options for data collection and their validity, strengths and weaknesses in determining the correct calibration corrections. Some problems, pitfalls and puzzling observed practices will be presented and discussed. This will be followed by an illustrative example of critical analysis of a USBL calibration data set. Final conclusions will be drawn and the potential developments for offshore positioning will be suggested.
