I wonder what your own experience is? Are you hampered in your work by a lack of understanding of the limitation of current hydrographic knowledge, and the challenges of improving it? These challenges range further than securing financing for the necessary data-gathering programmes. They include under-pinning issues of manpower, training and technical change. How sound is our I profession demographically? Are we attracting enough young people? Are shortfalls caused by periodic financial constraints working their way through the system, forming longer-term threats to succession planning for senior posts? If some prophets are right, and surveyors become shore-bound whilst field observation afloat becomes the preserve of the technician cadre, are there consequences for our 'sea sense' and our influence on the marine community? Membership of this Society is an important means of sharpening our awareness of the skills and core competencies of different elements of our profession, and of our vulnerabilities. RN surveyors have certainly appreciated the balanced coverage in this Journal, and in Soundings, over the last decade during which we have fought to sustain a military data-gathering and combat survey capability. I believe that it is important for all of us to foster teamwork, providing well-informed advocacy, corporately through this Society, and individually in our work-place, including government public service.
