With increasing adoption and usage of ECS the use of paper charts is shifting. The change in usage reflects a reasoned and practical approach to the best use of all available facilities. Several ships' crews indicated that they now use only the ECS for route planning. This indicates a greater acceptance of the technology as well as an appreciation of the probable timesaving elements associated with computer-based route planning. (Whether this is due to pressure of work or to a genuine desire to save time is not clear.)
