Summer stratification of temperature and other water-quality indicators throughout the depth of a reservoir, for example organic substances and dissolved oxygen, will create conditions for the regulation of water quality in both the reservoir itself, and also in the lower pool using selective water intake. Selecting water from some layer of the reservoir or simultaneously from several layers (epilimnion, thermocline, and hypolimnion) and by increasing or decreasing this intake, it is possible to vary the heat exchange in these layers, and in this manner, regulate their ability for self-purification, and, consequently, also the quality of the water, including the quality of the water delivered to the lower pool.
