One of the most unfavorable operating factors of hydrostations is the formation of a polynya downstream of the dam in the winter. Intense evaporation of water under conditions of sever cold creates extremely unfavorable conditions for people along the entire length of the polynya. Therefore a prediction of the dynamics of its spread is of considerable interest for hydrotechnical construction practice. The existing recommendations on the size of a polynya [1] suffer some uncertainty with respect to assigning design values and approaches to a determination of its parameters.
