The reservoir is a 20th century phenomenon. At the turn of the 20th century, the total volume of reservoirs on the globe amounted to 15 km~3, and now exceeds 6.6 thousand km~3. Their overall area is 400, 000 km~2. The creation of reservoirs has made it possible in many regions of the world to solve urgent problems involving water supply for the population and water storage; it was one of the conditions required for the development of water power, irrigation, and water transport, has made a significant contribution to flood and mudflow control, and has contributed to the effective water supply of number of cities, the development of recreation, etc.
