During propagation of a flood wave in a gradually varied channel, a quasi-uniform flow regime is established whereby the depth of the flow and its velocity are interrelated by the Chezy and Darcy-Weisbach formulas. The slope of the free surface acts as the slope here; however, in the case of large linear scales of examination, it is close to the slope of the bottom. In such a situation the flow can be described by the kinematic wave equation in which the equation of continuity is closed by the Chezy or Darcy-Weisbach formulas.
