ICAO has been at the forefront of aviation environmental issues since the 1960s. The Organization's work on the environment focuses primarily on issues that benefit most from a common and coordinated approach on a worldwide basis, namely aircraft noise and engine emissions. ICAO develops Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) in order to address its goals to limit or reduce the: 1. Number of people affected by significant aircraft noise, 2. Adverse impact of aviation emissions on local air quality, 3. Impact of aviation greenhouse gas emissions on the global climate.
