The three principal aims of this essay are: (ⅰ) to describe the changes in biomass that have taken place in North Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) stocks since 1970; (ⅱ) to investigate potential causes of prolonged periods of decline in biomass; and (ⅲ) to encourage the development and testing of more detailed and rigorous models of the processes causing decline in biomass, in particular by including the role of changes in weight-at-age. The working definition of a "prolonged period of decline" adopted here is a period during which total biomass or weight-at-age declines in five of seven consecutive years.
