drivers today are based more on integrated circuits (ICs). A steady replacement of discrete drivers with their IC counterparts has led to higher reliability, lower costs, and increased functionality. Modern dc?dc LED drivers are therefore typically a mixture of several discrete externals and a key IC. The trend toward even full integration is revealed by a recently presented capacitor-free single-inductor, multiple-output (SIMO) dc?dc LED driver [3]. This article reports on the integration challenges of these fully integrated devices and discusses the necessary high-voltage, double-diffused metal-oxide semiconductor (DMOS) field-effect transistors compared to the standard laterally DMOSs (LDMOSs) to preserve isolated LED strings without passive external components at dc supply voltages of up to 60 V.
