摘要

When the scientific revolutionr took off at the end ofr the 16th century, it wasr mainly concerned with mechanics andr medicine. Celestial mechanics was ther fulcrum of Copernicus’ heliocentricr theory, Galileo’s astronomical observations,r Kepler’s planetary analyses,r and, later, Huygens’ discoveries asr well as Newton’s universal gravitationalr theory. The motion of heavy bodiesr had been investigated by Stevin andr Galileo. There were good reasons forr granting mechanics such scientific attention.r For more than six centuries,r mechanic technology had boosted ther development of a new economy in Europe,r beginning with water and windr wheels, which freed artisanal productionr from dependency on muscularr power and left human energy free tor express itself in more creative activities.r For such reasons, kinematics andr mechanical power were central for ther men of the Renaissance.
