The original AT&T restructured into three independent companies: AT&T, Lucent Technologies, and NCR. With this restructuring, the lion's share of Bell Laboratories joined Lucent to become its research and development arm. Lucent Technologies manufactures telecommunications equipment and develops telecommunications systems. It also provides system components, support, software, and services. Within the research area of Bell Laboratories, members of the Multimedia Communication Research Department have created new ways for people to communicate. Our research focuses on real time, interactive, multiparty communications. Currently, we're working on several Internet based communications projects. The article provides a brief overview of six of them, listed from the earliest to the most recently begun.
