At this moment, as you scan and read this page, you are both “remote sensing” and “image processing.” Remote sensing is the process of acquiring data about a scene from a distance. Image processing is the subsequent correction, feature extraction, and classification of an image. Instinctively, we are familiar with the idea of obtaining a representation of a scene with the eye, and that image then undergoing processing in the brain. Another common sensor is the camera, which captures an image on film or uses a photo-electric detector.
