Time in the Sun: The Challenge of High PV Penetration in the German Electric Grid

Energy supply systems are facingr significant changes in many countries aroundr the globe. A good example of such a transformationr is the German power system,r where renewable energy sources (RESs)r are now contributing 25% of the powerr needed to meet electricity demand,r compared with 5% only 20 years ago.r In particular, photovoltaic (PV) systemsr have been skyrocketing over ther last couple of years. As of Septemberr 2012, about 1.2 million PV systemsr were installed, with a total installedr peak capacity of more than 31 GWp.r During some hours of 2012, PV alreadyr contributed about 40% of the peak powerr demand. It seems that Germany is well on ther way to sourcing a major portion of its energy needsr from solar installations. PV must therefore provide a fullr range of services to system operators so as to replace servicesr provided by conventional bulk power plants.
