The results of a theoretical and experimental investigation of thenSAW propagation characteristics in an optimal region of langasitendefined by the Euler angles Φ from -15° to +10°, Θnfrom 120° to 165°, and Ψ from 20° to 45° arenpresented. Based on temperature coefficients of the elastic constantsnderived from experimental data, some optimal orientations of langasitencharacterized by high electromechanical coupling factor (k2),nzero power flow angle (PFA) and low or zero temperature coefficient ofnfrequency (TCF) were found. The SAW velocity in the region of interestnis highly anisotropic; this results in a significant amount ofndiffraction, which must be taken into account in the search fornorientations useful for SAW devices. An orientation havingnsimultaneously zero PFA, zero TCF, negligible diffraction, andnrelatively high piezoelectric coupling has been found and verifiednexperimentally. The experimental results are in excellent agreement withnthe calculated SAW characteristics. The frequency response of a SAWndevice fabricated on the optimal cut of langasite is presented andndemonstrates that high performance SAW filters can be realized on thisnoptimal cut of langasite
