The article reviews ways to use the electromechanical reciprocitynrelation to construct theoretical models of measurement processes innultrasonic nondestructive evaluation. This relationship is importantnbecause it connects the change in the voltages measured at thenelectrical terminal of the transducer to the perturbation in thenmechanical wavefield caused by the change in the propagationnenvironment. It does so by mixing an unperturbed reference wavefieldnwith one containing the perturbed wavefield. Two problems of progressivendifficulty are explored. We begin by investigating the imaging of anone-dimensional sinusoidal fluid-solid interface using a cylindricallynfocused beam and continue by developing a model of the imaging of thenmechanical properties of a two-dimensional, thin solid film using anconfocal arrangement of point-focused transducers. This last problemnuses an approximation to the thin solid film, which reduces itsnmechanical response to one similar to that of a membrane. Integralnrelations are given that can be used to form integral equations or tongenerate asymptotic approximations to the particle displacements andnstresses in the film
