The transient responses of an optically pumped cesium beam tube tonsquare wave frequency and amplitude modulation is considered. Thenfrequency transient is computed assuming a phase difference Φ ofneither 0 or Π between the two oscillatory fields. We presentntheoretical and experimental data showing that, contrary to thenfrequency transient, the amplitude transient depends on the direction ofnswitching. The knowledge of this property is useful for the design ofnthe servo-loop controlling the amplitude of the microwave signal appliednto the atomic resonator. A justification of this asymmetrical behaviornis given. Experimental results confirm the theoretical predictions innthe case Φ=Π
