The marginal statistics for the diffused ultrasound speckle echonhas been postulated as exhibiting circularly symmetric Gaussian behaviornsimilar to the laser speckle for monochromatic illumination under thenassumption of a large number of unresolvable scatterers per resolutionncell. This is known in the literature as the Rayleigh scatteringncondition. This paper presents a formal statistical test, thenKolmogorov-Smirnov nonparametric goodness of fit statistical test, tontest the hypothesis that the unresolvable part (diffuse part) of thenbackscatter echo follows a Rayleigh scattering condition, and obtainnnumerical values for the scatterer concentration required for thenRayleigh condition to be valid. In addition, it presents a formalnstatistical test, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov nonparametric homogeneitynstatistical test, to compare two regions of interest with differentnscattering concentrations without prior knowledge of the nature of thenscattering conditions (Rayleigh or non-Rayleigh scattering). Unlike allnprevious parametric testing methods that treat the A-scan or B-scan echonas a random sample, the authors' method presents formal tests based onnthe colored nature of the diffuse backscattered echo which is a morenrealistic model of the diffuse scattering component.
