Treatment planning for ultrasound phased arrays suggests anstrategy for hyperthermia therapy which satisfies therapeutic conditionsnat the target and spares other sensitive anatomical structures. Tonpredict both desirable and harmful interactions between ultrasound andnimportant structures such as the tumor, bones, and air pockets, anhyperthermia treatment planning system has been developed for ultrasoundnphased arrays. This collection of treatment planning routines consistsnof geometric and thermal optimization procedures specific to ultrasoundnphased arrays, where geometric treatment planning, combined with thermalntreatment planning and three-dimensional visualization, providesnessential information for the optimization of individual patientntreatments. A patient image data set for cancer of the prostate, andifficult target situated in the midst of multiple pelvic bonenobstructions, illustrates the geometric treatment planning algorithm andnother tools for treatment analysis. The results indicate that thenanalysis of complex three-dimensional relationships between thenapplicator, anatomical structures, and incident fields provides annimportant means of predicting treatment limiting conditions, therebynallowing the hyperthermia applicator to electronically adapt tonindividual patients and specific sites
