The paper presents a general approach for designing and animatingncomplex deformable models with implicit surfaces. Implicit surfaces arenintroduced as an extra layer coating any kind of structure that movesnand deforms over time. Offering a compact definition of a smooth surfacenaround an object, they provide an efficient collision detectionnmechanism. The implicit layer deforms in order to generate exact contactnsurfaces between colliding bodies. A simple physically based modelnapproximating elastic behavior is then used for computing collisionnresponse. The implicit formulation also eases the control of thenobject's volume with a new method based on local controllers. We presentntwo different applications that illustrate the benefits of thesentechniques. First, the animation of simple characters made ofnarticulated skeletons coated with implicit flesh exploits thencompactness and enhanced control of the model. The second builds on thenspecific properties of implicit surfaces for modeling soft inelasticnsubstances capable of separation and fusion that maintain a constantnvolume when animated
