Recent Advances in Human Wayfinding and Spatial Cognition

摘要

To ensure a uniform base of concept understanding, the first section offers a series of key word definitions. This is followed by a discussion of basic research on components of spatial cognition that seem to have generated the most research activity in recent years, particularly as they apply to wayfinding and navigation activities, including: cognitive mapping; frames of reference; spatial updating; spatial skills and abilities; alignment effects; wayfinding; path integration; piloting; and use of spatial language for direction giving. This is followed by a more applied section in which wayfinding practices are examined, with some emphasis on development of wayfinding aids such as: GPS; cell phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs); personal guidance systems; remote auditory signage; building Smart Environments; wearable computers; augmented reality; and in-vehicle navigation devices. The final section speculates about future trends, particularly noting the need to integrate cognitive components into predictive models of travel behavior.
