A final approach course can be a crazy place. Controllers are trying to squeeze a variety of aircraft onto a single imaginary line leading to the runway. While we'll slow some aircraft, others may get to go faster. We may tell you to "Maintain maximum forward airspeed," (correct phraseology) or "Keep your speed up," (incorrect, but gets the same message across). If we need a hard speed, we'll assign it. However, what if you simply can't do it safely? Most controllers aren't pilots and will have no idea what V_(NE), V_(FE), V_(LE), or V_(LO) even mean, much less what those specific speeds are for your aircraft. They just care if you can give them the speed they need for their sequence.
