摘要

I just finished reading (and rereading) the article "A Rogue Gust in IMC" (June 2011, IFR) and find a serious flaw in the analysis. I have no idea where Scott Dennstaedt calls home, but he clearlyis not familiar with flying the mountains and valleys of Virginia and West Virginia. My home base is Shenandoah Valley (KSHD), which is just one ridge over from Grant County, so to say that I am familiar with the area is an understatement.Whether the winds aloft forecast was calling for winds or not is almost irrelevant given the frontal passage and its locationbeing just east of Grant County. Anytime you are flying at 6000 feet over the mountains, especially after a frontal passage, should be a clear warning of potential problems. All you have to do is look at the approach plate to see the MSA'sshown and the high approach profile to know that the terrain below is rugged. And that rugged terrain can and does lead to a lot of low-level turbulence and wind sheer.
