Too many pilots mistake being able to manage advanced aircraft systems with being able to fly an advanced aircraft well. The base skill-set used to fly instruments is the same in any cockpit. However, too many new in-rnstrument certificate holders are instrument programmers, not instrument pilots. Many don't have the basic skills their predecessors had beaten into them.rnI find that many older, round-gauge pilots seem to be better IFR pilots overall. Perhaps that's because they first mastered those basic skills.
