Somewhere in my flying past, I enjoyed 150 hours or so in a Mooney 231 with a King KNS-80. This wonder box was a real RNAV unit from the days before IFR GPSs; it did its magic with VORs and DME alone.rnThe underlying concept was simple: Your position could be known as an azimuth and distance from a VOR. The point in space you want to fly to can also be quantified as an azimuth and distance from a VOR (for the time being, let's say it's the same VOR). Now connect those two waypoints with a straight line. Every point along that line could be defined as an azimuth and distance from the VOR. For example, if you were on the 360 radial at 50 miles and you wanted to go to the 060 radial at 40 miles, you would pass through the 001 radial at something like 49.5 miles, the 002 at 49.1 miles and so on.
