Imagine you're flying your G1000-equipped mount at 12,000 feet. At ETA minus one hour, you twist the map range knob to check the fuel range rings and see that you don't quite have enough fuel to arrive at your destination with your planned one-hour reserve. Out come the power-setting charts and you re- duce power until the G1000 confirms that you should land with adequate fuel reserves. As you begin your VFR arrival into the complex terminal area surrounding your destination, you have the Class B airspace on the MFD map, but but beside the HSI you can also track the bearing and distance to the Class B airport. You know that outside 12 miles this altitude is good no matter what.
