Many of these clinics start out with a question. We make some calls to get something explained only to uncover a mistake lurking in the chart. Then a NOTAM gets issued, courtesy of your friendly magazine. For those of you who fly to Catalina Island, we're sorry. We did it again. For those who have never been there, Catalina Island (technically, Santa Catalina Island) is a small, mountainous island about 25 miles off the coast of Los Angeles. The island has a relatively long history of being a trading post for different groups of settlers, but the current history of the island was set into motion by William Wrigley-of chewing-gum fame-when he purchased the island from multiple shareholders in 1919, set on bringing the island into the 20th century and creating a conservancy that would serve as a small and quiet tourist destination. The town of Avalon, Calif, serves as the main population center and hub of recreation for visitors.
