Thunderstorms are just a bad place to be- turbulence, heavy precipitation, hail, wind shear and, of course, lightning. If you enter a thunderstorm, though, lightning is unlikely to be the item that ends your flight. Should you even worry about lightning? Or is it pointless, like Robert Redford's Sundance Kidrnworrying about whether he'll be able to swim after he jumps from a cliff so high he'll almost certainly die from the fall?rnThe effects of a lightning strike on an aircraft run the gamut from uneventful to catastrophic. To gauge the danger to yourself, you need to understand how aircraft are protected, how lightning mayrnaffect your aircraft, why lightning strikes are under-reported, and why you just might encounter lightning where you don't expect it.rnAircraft ProtectionrnThe aluminum skin and structure of metal aircraft provide an excellent conductor for lightning, which tends to divert most or all of the current away from the aircraft's electrical components and other systems. Bonding straps between the aircraft wings, flight controls, and other disparate components are important for preventing arcing, which can result in high temperatures and pressures (due to high-energy shock waves), and substantially greater damage.
