They had me cornered and outnumbered three-to-one. Garmin engineers, and tough ones by the looks of 'em, holding photocopies of articles from IFR dating back to 2005. Their plan was to set me straight on how to use-and not use-a Garmin GPS navigator. I'd actually been waiting for this moment. Garmin invited me out to Olathe, Kan., to see some of their latest gear, tour the factory and discuss some topics I'd written about. I'd never been to Garmin HQ, and the timing was good, but that last agenda item concerned me. I've been critical of some Garmin design choices, and I had a recurring vision of this trip ending with a one-way trip to a remote farm pond somewhere west of Leavenworth. It turned out that this group was seriously concerned that one particular piece of advice could jeopardize your safety.
