Nice article on track in the April issue ("Two New Words for ATC," April 2008 IFR). When I ask for direct to a waypoint, I add on "The track will be ### degrees." I think it helps the controller visualize the direction I am asking for. Also, controllers use a track feature on their displays all the time. They can enter a waypoint in their automation and display a line to that waypoint. I wish that there was an easy way to set a track in the Garmin avionics. The best way I've found is to create a waypoint at your current position, go direct to it, and then switch to OBS mode to create the track. That's pretty kludgy, and it takes more button pushing to get back to your flight plan.
