The successful troubleshooting of failed avionics can be challenging enough to absorb while safe and relaxed on the ground. But when you are smack in the middle of a solid overcast and faced with shooting an approach to minimums, the task can be nearly impossible. While it's a stretch to ask the average instrument pilot to think like a seasoned avionics technician, a similar technical approach to simple troubleshooting is needed to get a handle on the problem-and get the aircraft safely on the ground.
