Students going for their instrument checkride in Maine may find themselves planning a flight to Presque Isle, Maine, (KPQI). With a population of just over 10,000, the town isn't a metropolis but the plate for the ILS or LOC Rwy 1 sure has a lot going on.rnUnless you're arriving from Canada, you'll be coming from the south or southwest. Take a look at the three transitions posted from the Houlton (HUL) and Millinocket (MLT) VORs. Two transitions require DME. It's easy to see that on the short arrow off HUL which shows a route at 3100 to the IAF at a 25-mile DME fix from PQI. The MLT transition is also to the DME fix, but it's not marked as such. That's because your next turn is at a lead radial, LR-190 off the Presque Isle VOR (PQI).
