To say I've been lucky in my flying career would be an incredible understatement. As I write this, I'm deadheading on a 747 over Canada, going from Anchorage, Alaska, to my domicile in Kentucky after operating the MD-11 on a trip to Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Shanghai. Did I mention that the trip to Hong Kong was through Russian airspace? The three pilots on board include one ex-Army helo pilot and Viet Nam veteran, one former F-15 driver, and one ex-F-16 pilot. Needless to say, we never thought we'd be flying through that airspace — at least not with a clearance and talking to ATC.
