Let it be said that this article is not glass-bashing; sour grapes, perhaps. Those among you who can afford to buy a new G1000 Mooney should stop reading. Your price will be somewhere around a half a million, give or take, for which you will get a new airframe, a new engine, approved de-icing, great electronics, and comfortable seats. On the other hand, if you're in my situation, flying a nice Mooney 252, and you're merely looking to hit parity on mission capability and dispatch reliability, read on. So what's different between my steam-gauge airplane and one with a glass panel? I see it as $200,000-$300,000, a vacuum pump, and a backup alternator. Other than that, my panel duplicates all func-tions of the glass panel and exceeds it in two areas: a second transpon-der and a backup glide-slope without reprogramming a screen. Of course, the glass airplane has, er, glass.
