With technologically advanced instrument panels, we can jump into the airplane, fire up the GPS, put in our flight plan, and take off. No need to worry about Restricted Area 2518 because it's right there on the moving map. My Garmin 430 does a great flight plan. But I'm not comfortable without a flight log. I like one for any trip of significant length, say 120-mile or more. Flight planning makes a flight safe and efficient. A flight log is part of the process. Flight planning is vicarious flying ahead of time and that's fun. I visualize the flight log as micro planning, done after macro plan- ning. Macro planning is checking the weather including wind patterns and taking a look at various route alternatives and landing alternates. Route A might be the shortest route. Route B could be another route with lower MEAs or to the right of a low, left of a high, or around a thunderstorm area. A planning chart with restricted areas, MOAs, and general depiction of terrain is valuable for the macro part. Then you get the specifics from departure, high altitude, low altitude, standard arrival, area, or approach charts on the flight log and between your ears.
