Elmer Ambrose Sperry invented the first autopilot during World War I, and chances are it weighed more than most airplanes flying at that time. IS was called Metal Mike and it literally drove a ship. One war later Bill Lear had adapted the technology to aircraft and Metal Mike had a son named George, and for over half-a-century George has been the favorite copilot for flyers of airplanes large and small. Early autopilots had limited capabilities, but by 1962 Bill Lear had a system that was making automatic landings of large, sophisticated, passenger aircraft. Small general aviation autopilots started as simple wing levelers. The next generation had nav-tracking capabilities, then came altitude hold and approach coupling. The latest GA autopilots have altitude pre-select and vertical navigation. Auto-land is still reserved for the realm of airliners, and at the current rate of technological acceleration we may soon have auto-land in a Spam-can.
