Night IFR is like day IFR except you can't see out of the windows. Come to think of it, that's what day IFR is supposed to be about too. Night IFR is often perceived to be more dangerous than day IFR, but is it? Although numerically fewer accidents happen at night, statistically about 60 percent of them are fatal. Intuitively, night IFR seems more dangerous, if only because if you have to land off airport, it can be impossible to identify a safe place to land. And like it or not, day IMC provides visual clues regarding which way is up that don't exist in IMC at night. But, ironically enough, the fatality rate for day IMC accidents is almost 60 percent too. Draw your own conclusion. But airplanes don't know when it's dark, so the accomplished pilots need to fly IFR at night to get the most out of the system and their investments. With that it becomes a question of balancing risk.
