Do you ever get the feeling that ATC might be screwing with you? That FAA headquarters told the controller issuing you a clearance, "Hey, Judy, give that Malibu a silly reroute and make the pilot read back the whole thing." Well, stow your paranoia in the baggage compartment, because...the FAA is messing with your mind. Only Microsoft has more power to frustrate than they do. Despite advances in acronym-laden technology, Part 91 pilots for the most part still file flight plans that pass through several computers and many hands before making it back to the IFR cockpit in the form of a verbal clearance. In the journey, what you so carefully filed often gets butchered. Your route and altitude might not blend with secret local agreements among ATC facilities. As a result, any change from what you filed to what the controller ultimately sees on the flight progress strip must be verified.
