Take a map of northern California and run your finger along the coastline as it scribbles its way southeastward to Big Sur. A hundred miles below the Golden Gate, the Pacific Ocean gouges into the shoreline forming the Monterey Bay. At the south end is Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach, and the decommissioned Fort Ord with its former Army Airfield, now operated by the city of Marina and open to the public. Monterey Airport is a short distance southwest of that, and to the east is Salinas Airport and VORTAC, smack in Steinbeck's back garden.
