摘要

The monumental commentary on European copyright law, edited and to a large extent written by Michel M. Walter and Silke von Lewinski, had a forerunner in the German language, published under the title of "Europaisches Urheber-recht - Kommentar" (Vienna/New York) in 2001. When I had for the first time been able to consult that German version, my spontaneous reaction was that such an important commentary should absolutely be available in English. Its almost unique character and its enormous merits in commenting, analyzing and, where necessary, criticizing the whole body of European copyright law would make it a must for a professional public far beyond the German-speaking audience. But, apart from the question of how to finance a possible translation of such an almost encyclopaedic work of more than 1,200 (in the present English edition more than 1,500) pages, the terminological difficulties and technicalities of legal language in general and of legal German in particular easily explain that this could never be a simple translational endeavour, even by an experienced and potent publisher.
