Experts from industry, government, and the clinical world serving on the AAMI Cardiac Rhythm Management Transvenous Leads Working Group are developing improved standards for lead reliability. The new standards seek to remedy limitations with the existing standards, which were developed in the 1990s. Those standards have proven to be insufficiently sensitive to meet reliability expectations for the current generation of leads. The goal of the working group is to develop standard requirements for specified performance characteristics of implantable CRM leads that are adequate to distinguish designs that will result in satisfactory performance in service from those designs that might not.
