Seafaring has always been one of the world's most dangerous occupations. The unpredictability of the weather, the vast power of the sea itself and the nature of some of the cargoes carried by sea mean that danger is never far away. However, over the years, IMO has developed and adopted a wide range of measures specifically to improve safety at sea. Undoubtedly, these measures have played their part in the steady downward trend in maritime casualties over several decades.
