Promotional transactional printing, i.e., using full-color variable data on bills and statements for cross-selling, up-selling and customer retention, will eventually go mainstream, and it will probably happen sooner than you think. It already represents about 30 percent of the variable-data print volume from our last survey of in-plant printing, even though relatively few organizations were doing it. IBM is gearing up for it, and IBM is usually not a company that makes rash gambles on the market.
